Jesus Lizard – Head (1990)

true

I still remember as if it were today the first time I’ve heard Jesus Lizard’s Head in October 1990.

I was feeling melancholy cause despite some good albums were released I wasn’t able to find anything really blazing that hit me deeply in the guts. Then a miracle happened, a godly soul lent me two albums: Frizzle Fry by Primus and Head by Jesus Lizard.
I can assure you that that day will remain imprinted in my memory for long time. (*)

What to say?

Head is a really pleasant big punch in the stomach, amazingly played with cross-references to great bands like Swans and especially Birthday Party.
Jesus Lizard in this album as in the previous EP Pure (included on Head’s CD version) demonstrated their personal identity and defined strengths, which it will inspire many other bands.

Head has something more valuable than Pure: the drummer Mac McNeilly (drum machines were used on Pure) who delivers greater dynamism to the songs.
The entire album is remarkable; if I would have to choose only one song I would recommend the poignant Pastoral.

This album must be part of your music collection.

A masterpiece!!!
